After posting a 12-under (60) on Saturday and taking a 2 shot lead on the field, James Van De Griff & Dustin Davis appeared to have short route to the winners circle again but the heat was poured on by Kevin Gryder fresh off his win in the Creekside Invitational and Tony Wallace.
Wallace & Gryder didnt appear to be a challenge as they turned the backside (their front nine) at 3 under with Davis & Van de Griff posting a 7 under through their first 12 holes after starting on the 9th hole. From that point Wallace & Gryder put on a chip and putt show finishing the frontside at Three Ridges with 7 more birdies to go 10-under. "We heard they were doing well on the front side, but all we could make were pars," said Van de Griff. After doing some math they figured they were still okay but it was closer than they needed to hear.
With the final tally in, the 65-62 by Gryder & Wallace was two short of the 125 total by the defending champions, making them the first repeat champions in the tournament history. James Van De Griff & Dustin Davis finished the first decade of the century with a win and carried another win into the second decade as the team to beat at Three Ridges.
There were 3 teams tied for 3rd at 130 including Kegley & Penland, Turner & Hammonds, Martin & King.
In the Senior Division Donnie Varner & Ted Arsenault held off Sam Bounds & Robert Wright to win by 2 shots after posting matching 64 rounds.
In the First Flight Skeen & Dalton charged ahead of six teams to capture the win after posting a 9-under on Sunday follow closely by the Atkins brothers Chris & Mark who made a charge of their on passing a dozen teams to finish 2nd. "We were 2-under after 11 holes and everything just starting falling," said Chris with string of birdies on the back nine along with an eagle on the 12th hole.
The shot of the tournament came from Scott Collette who collected his first hole-in-one on the infamous #16 par-3. Collette used a 5-iron from 180 yards straight at the stick with a bounce from 6-foot short of the hole to find its way home. The Ace propelled Collette and partner Les Carr to 3rd place in flight.
The Second Flight ended in a tie for 1st with Reynolds & Robinson winning the prize position for first place over local lowball director Ken Garrison & George Gregory. Nothing like a little "home-cookin" to make Garrison a happy golfer. Right behind the winners were Hall & Smith one shot back.
Once again the staff at Three Ridges headed by Mark Brown PGA Head Pro performed flawlessly in preparation for the tournament including an awesome meal on Saturday of pork steaks, potato and pasta salad, and other trimmings. We would call it "The Best Meal in Knoxville" for that day.
Also, Superintendent Kevin Lewis had the course in premium condition in spite of the downpour on Saturday and through the night. Three Ridges has finally reached the position we can safely and proudly call it "The Best Public Course" in Knoxville.

Chris Wynne Captures His First Woodlake Invitational
On another one of the blistering days of Summer, Chris Wynne, former Tusculum standout ('08) drove and putted his way through six players who shot in the 60's on Saturday to capture his first Woodlake title as improved by five shots from 70 to 65 after moving back to the Black tee boxes. James Van De Griff who matched Saturdays round with a 68 held on to second place ahead of Josh Cornett who posted round of 68-69. The shot of the day and probably the best shot of the year, was delivered by Cornett on the par-4 10th hole as he used a driver to carry 345 yard hole (downhill) to post a hole-in-one. Corey Talley who led the field coming into Sunday's round dropped to an even par round to tie with Nick York for fourth place.
In the Senior Division Gary Gibson posted a 69 on Saturday to lead by four shots over Mike Maples. Former champion A C Cooper maintained duplicated his 74 on Saturday and Maples dropped to a 77 allowing Gibson to cruise in for a six-shot win. Glenn Swaggarty matched Coopers scores and tied for second. Mark Swaggerty move to a tie for fourth with Maples as he improved by four shots on Sunday.
A familiar name to the championship flight, Josh Collins took the First Flight after suffering from a golf virus (I cant find the hole) on Saturday, winning by two shots over Payne Jones. Collins 68 on Sunday was the lowest round of the open division.
In the Second Flight Tre Mullins improved by seven shots to win by one shot over Matt Bowers. The Third Flight was won by Joey Davis with an 11 shot improvement and apparently suffering from the golf virus on Saturday as well was Chris Wolfenbarger as he improved by 11 shots to win the Fourth flight. Wolfenbarger is part of the 2-man team with Doug Shumate who has won two championship in the past year.
Mrs. Muncy once again proved her expertise in the kitchen as she fixed anothe awesome meal of "hanging of the bun" hamburgers, beans, potato salad, the world's best pasta salad and homemade desserts of banana pudding and brownies drizzled with chocolate sauce. Her efforts makes the heat and high scores by the non-winners worth the trip and wait on Sunday.
Travis Muncy and his staff performed flawlessly in taking care of the golfers and with the exception of Eric Kennedy had all of his players (LMU) from the 2010 Conference Championship available for a group photo. See all the winners in the photo album and the front page of the website.

Bryan Kendrick & Greg Turner (58 were one shot back on Sunday morning to the former champions Wiley Jones & Dale Rutherford (57) but their challenge came from the Swaggerty brothers Mark & Glenn who came from out of a group of teams who posted rounds of 60 on Saturday. As Jones & Rutherford ran into trouble on the front side (red nine) Kendrick & Turner turned on the gas with a six under front.
While the Swaggerty boys were matching their 60 round on Saturday Kendrick & Turner posted a 61 to seal a one-shot win.
Kendrick & Turner last won a 2-Man at Woodlake when Turner "aced" the 13th hole to give them a one-shot win.
The Whittle Springs groups of Bobby Wise & Ricky Lane finished 4th while Bobby Lewis & Mike Ardner showed they had the "senior" stuff with a 12-under on Saturday and 8-under on Sunday to land in 5th place.
In the First Flight former Knoxville City Champs John Childress & Buff Mathena tied with another City champ Donnie Varner & his partner Bob Boatman at 124.
The "Bama" & "UT" odd ball team of Sam Bounds & Robert Wright held-off Honey Messer & J.D. Wyatt to win the second flight. Both teams posted 9-under rounds on Sunday. And in the Third Flight Bill Christian teamed with Roy Hankins and found the right end of the putter to improve by 7-shots to win by one over a log-jam of teams tied for second all of whom posted 70-67 rounds.

Brad Campbell took care of business in Morristown this year by winning both the Country Club Invitational after coming from 4 down on Saturday passing 3 other players, and earlier this season capturing the Lakeway Championship at Millstone in similar fashion. With wet conditions keeping drives short and stretching the already tough course into a monster scores were higher than normal with Campbells one-over 145 beating Dane Fairfield and Dirk Daniel by one-shot.
In the first flight Greg Nichols of Gatlinburg improved by five shots to hold off Scott Strike and Tim Moore by two shots. John Minor , Jr woke up on Sunday and played to his ability posting a three-under 69 improving by 15-shots and winning by 11 strokes over Dustin Williams.
The Senior winner was Rick Harrell two shots back from Saturdays leader Randall Irwin but posted a two-under 70 to catch and defeat Irwin and Knoxville dentist Ron Kilgore by three shots.
In the Senior First Flight local Terry Ball improved by 9 shots and posted a one-under 71 to win by 8 strokes over, Jack Hodgson, David Rivers and Dick Kammann.
The excitement for Zack Cole came on Saturday as he bagged his first hole-in-one on the fourth hole with a gap wedge from 131 yards. "It hit just past the hole and spun back in" said the happy Zack.

Willow Creek a Family Sweep by the Rodgers duo Bryan and Brandon
After 7 years of the Willow Creek Invitational with Brandon Rodgers making his tournament debut the first year as a youngster in the open division and dad Bryan Rodgers competing in the championship flight, the father - son golf game has made a full circle.
Brandon captured the championship on the first hole of a playoff with former champion Bobby Baird, while dad Bryan edged-out defending senior champion Bill Roach on the second hole a playoff for the senior title. Roach had also swept the tournament three years ago with son Wes taking the championship while Bill won the senior division.
"I'm so proud of Brandon," said Bryan. "I was more nervous watching his playoff than I was in mine," he added.
Brandon was the 2008 "Golf News Boys Player of the Year" and has continued to improve his skills and compete in the top five in local men's tournaments. The Willow Creek Invitational was played against fellow and former high school competitors and teammates.
Going into Sunday's round Hayden Anderson (69), one of the First-Team prep all-star golfers last year, had a lead over Baird and Grant Milner who posted one-under rounds of 71 on Saturday. Rodgers was even par at 72.
While Anderson dropped to a 74 on Sunday and Milner to a 77, Baird and Rodgers both took the inside track to the lead with Rodgers making birdie on the last hole to draw to a tie with Baird forcing the playoff. Rodgers was at six-under for the day while Baird posted a four-under round. The streak of the day that led to the Rodgers championship was birdies on holes six through nine that gave him the confidence to drive for the win.
With Anderson finishing 3rd at one-under for the tournament, Baneberry's Alex Coughlin improved from 73 on Saturday to 71 on Sunday to finish even par and capture 4th place.
In the Senior Division Bill Roach has held the title several years straight but the year belonged to Bryan Rodgers as he matched Roach both days at 73-68. It looked tough for Rodgers as he bogied the 15th hole but held on to force the playoff. Roach bogied the par-3 second hole to let go of his win streak. Gary Dean who started one shot back, posted a 76 but held on to 3rd place over Sandy Burnette and Cliff Thomas who tied for 4th.
In the First Flight Kerry Queener took on the junior golfer Graham Gosselin and forced a playoff as both shot one over par for the tournament. Queener found trouble on the first hole but drained a birdie putt to capture the win. Greg King of Onieda finished 3rd maintaining 74 - 74 rounds.
In the Second Flight Michael Martin outlasted Dan Mitchell for the win as he moved from 80 on Saturday to 75 on Sunday to win by three shots. Mitchell started two shots back but moved from 82 to 76 for 2nd place. Chris Fuqua impoved from 81 to 79 to garner 3rd place.
The Willow Creek Invitational has grown in sponsorship and prizes over the 7 years its been operating as Scott Perkins, head professional, has always been mindful of the expectations of the competitors in the event. This year's prize payout and tournament meal both days is directly related to the number of sponsors whom have backed the tournament. (the list of sponsors follows the results)
The new Food & Beverage Manager Sharee Jenkins is not new to Willow Creek as she has served as a snack bar assistant under two different managers for the past 5 years. Her recent promotion to manager has sparked a change from the typical catering of events to gourmet meals and finger food specialties. Saturday the competitors were surprised to find grilled super-sized hamburgers and hotdogs with all the side dishes including beans, slaw, pasta salad, etc. But also made from scratch desserts like the turtle brownies and banana pudding that were as tasty as anything grandmother can bake or make.
On Sunday Sharee put on a finger food gala with tuna, ham, and turkey wraps, two varities of chicken wings, meatballs, wennie-wraps and a Santa Fe chicken Fiesta salad that rivals any restaurant in the Southwest U.S.. If you are planning an outing it should be enough to know Willow Creek is one of the top public facility golf clubs in East Tennessee, but the catering by Sharee Jenkins will make your outing the best you have ever held. Call Sharee at 218-5524 for information on catering your party or golf outing luncheon or dinner. You'll find food pictures on the photo album of the Willow Creek Invitational.

Make plans NOW to play the Willow Creek Invitational next year and see how it can be.Collins & King and Hickey & Kennedy co-champions at Clinchview 2-Man
The tradition of holding the largest 2-man event of the year continues at Clinchview Golf Club and after 20+ years it just keeps getting better. This years drama was increased in the championship flight with 8 teams in position to make a charge for the win. Last years defending champions Griffin & Jackson were not ready to give up their seat but the young guns out of Knoxville, the seasoned veterans out of Maryville, the top players out of Kentucky and the "Home Boys" Smith & Jarnigan were up to the challenge.
The Knoxville teams of Josh Collins & Matt King and Mark Hickey & Eric Kennedy finished as co-champions, the first time the tournament has ended in a tie. Jackson & Griffin gave up their title after finishing with a 64 and 1 back of the winners and tied for 3rd with Wallace & Gryder. First round leaders Gann & Caldwell finished 5th and the local heros Smith & Jarnigan made some glitches along the way to finish 6th.
Grady Daniel & Jimmy Moore held off the charge in the First Flight for one-shot win over Harrell & Sennett, four-shots ahead of the rest of the flight. Campbell & Jones outlasted locales Harris & Cannon by two-shots in the Second Flight. Stewart & Audia out of Pennington Gap, VA, sqeezed in a win in the Third Flight with chip-ins and long putts defeating Harris & Harris and Quinton & Webb by one-shot.
Murphy & Honeycutt posted a seven better round on sunday to defeat Clapp & Ramsey by one-shot in the Fourth Flight. Heck & Voiles won the Fifth Flight by one-shot over Nickels & Baker and in the Sixth Flight Stepp & Lamb garnerd a win by two-shots over Cox & Jones.
The Keck family once again provided the dinner on Saturday evening and really picked it up another notch with the best meal they have served and really didnt believe that was possible but Kelly and Tommy Keck kept the grilled fired up with pork steak, pork tenderloins, chicken, summer sausage and all the dishes and trimmings to go along with the meats. If you have never played the Clinchview 2-Man you will never know how good it gets with golf and food. Plan early and sign-up for next year as it fills-up and leaves some wishing they had played.
Also hats off to the staff at Clinchview for an awesome job in providing food and beverage throughout the tournament and another excellent job by Angie and Barbie Keck and Ronnie Boyd for the shuffling the 120+ teams through the check-in and scoring area. Mark Clinchview down again for tournament of the year.
Also we send our best wishes for recovery to Mrs Keck who has not been well and had to miss the tournament for the first time. She can rest safe knowing the family continued her tradition of serving the best meal ever.

Clapp wins White Pine Invitational in playoff with Collins
Patrick Clapp and Josh Collins may have grown up together playing golf and forming a lifelong friendship but they played head-to-head after finishing tied in regulation at the White Pine Invitational. Both players birdied the first hole and then par'd the second and third holes. The deciding hole was the 4th where Collins came up short on his par putt leaving Clapp for par and the win.
Clapp & Collins also posted the tournament record now in its fourth year, 7-under and 3-under rounds for a 10-under 134 total. Going into Sunday's round two local players known for their competitive play in the area, were Cody Gilbert and Lucas Tabor. Tabor was one back going into the final round and dropped another shot with his 2-under 70 on Sunday. Gilbert started 2-down and went 2-over Sunday to finish 7-back.
Randall Irwin, who built the course with his father and then won the innaugral tournament four years ago and finished second last year, couldn't get it going either day to make a challege but finished 1-over.
Irwin is also being named this year as the Superintendent of the Decade by Golf News. His work in the golf business extends from White Pine to Smoky Mountain and the last 10 years at Baneberry.
In the First Flight Zach Cole maintained his 1-shot lead from Saturday after a few misfires that allowed Mike Seal, Glenn Makin, Shannon Moore and David Rivers to take turns at the lead during Sunday's round. Each faltered to allow Cole keep his flight win. Moore was the only player to post a score equal to his Saturday round as the other all added strokes to their Saturday scores.
In the Third Flight Barney held steady at 85 each day to win by 1-shot over J. Jones. There was a third place playoff between Veg and Talley with Talley taking 3rd in the playoff.
In the Second Flight Bill Sanders improved by 1-shot to take 1st place and win by 2-shots over Chafin and Creager.
The White Pine Invitational has been a success due to the work of Superintendent Marty Cate in preparing the course for the tournament with fantastic greens conditions. General Manager Chris Voiles and his tournament volunteer Claude kept the players moving and Carolyn Voiles prepared meals for both days which included barbeque, summer sausage, beans, coleslaw, potato salad and her special "Got to sneak out with some" brownies. Sunday included loaded hotdogs and chips and salsa. Drinks were also provided both days.
Watch for the article on the newly remodeled Clubhouse and proshop, paved parking lot and game room. Also the new barbeque pit area perfect for holding fundraisers. And thank you to Ron & Betty Ogle for all their investment in making White Pine a rising star.

Brown & Mooday capture Patriot Hills 2-Man Scottish Lowball Kevin Brown & Paul Moody have played the victory lap around Patriot Hills for the third time and just keep getting stronger as this year they outlasted 8 teams within 1-shot to prove they have claim to the best 2-man team to play in the either of the 2-man events held at the Jefferson City course.
And runner-ups Michael Holt & Mark Franklin are the “Gift that just keeps Giving.” As Mark says, “this is the third time we have finished second to them.”
As noted by the scores on Sunday the Championship Flight moved back to the Blue Tee Boxes adding several hundred yards and the extra club or two that keeps the teams from getting their approach shots closer.
In the First Flight Wyle Jones & Mike Smith of Three Ridges showed the only improvement in the flight to win by 5-shots over Shannon Moore & Jerry Cureton.
Whittenburg & Fender of Greeneville improved by 5-shots on Sunday to beat Kendrick & Turner by 4-shots in the Second Flight.
The Newport team of Quinton & Briggs scored the lowest round of the day and exceeded the 10% rule by 2-shots. After the adjustment they still captured the Third Flight by 2-shots over the Burdette brothers and Ferguson & Cochran.
Bailey & Bailey pulled-away in the fourth flight by 3-shots over Stroud & Daniels. While Holston Hills favorite seniors Glenn & Kirby won by 2-shots in the Fifth Flight.
Hats off again to Dennis Robideaux for the excellent course conditions and the staff at Patriot Hills for making everyone feel welcomed.

Brad Campbell wins his first Title in Lakeway Championship

Lakeside Golf CoursePolk Brown comes from three shots down to win his third straight Roane County Amateur title in a playoff against two-time champion John Thomas on the 6th hole.
Brown, a local favorite, had not won the tournament during his high school days, turned professional and worked at Holston Hills Country Club before returning to the amateur ranks prior to the 2008 event. He made his hit on the local amateur scene with a victory in the Knoxville City Championship in 2002.
Thomas had won the tournament two times with his most recent win coming in 2006. His work as director of the Autism Tournament has earned him honors as both Golf News Tournament Director of the Year and Charity Event of the Year.
Local Jeff White captured the first flight with a one-over 141 total over Bobby Taylor at 142. Three-Time Champion and Roane County Tournament Director Paul "Demus" Morton finished third.
Paul Sivik captured the Second Flight in a close battle with Ted Morton and Roy Settle by one-shot.
Shanno Casteel won by two-shots in the Third Flight over D J Shannon. And Pat Conner took top honors in the Senior division by two-shots over Jim Nall.
Morton gave thanks and appreciation to the many local sponsors of the event who made the event a success. And the staff at Lakeside gave assistance to the players as well as the Women's Golf Association providing a bake sale for the hungry players. Thanks to all for an awesome tournament.

The EGolf Tour is a great way to meet new people with a passion for the game of golf and to have fun competing in an organized format.
The Egolf Tour has some 20+ area chapters including the East Tennessee Chapter directed by Wes and Cassie Cleeney.
Wes organizes each event which includes a tour of 13 area course, three joint event within several hours of Knoxville and the national championship at the end of the season.
The local tour dates are one day (Saturday) events with travel joint events as two day tournaments.
The East Tennessee EGolf Tour Chapter was opened four years ago by Larry Lee of the EGolf Tour who continues to Direct Tours in other areas.
Wes took over the position as Director during the 2008 season and has continued to grow the membership. After a year of only drawing 10 to 12 players per event in East Tennessee, We has grown the Tour to having over 20 players per event. “We have 35 paid members at this point,” says Wes. “But we keep adding a couple new members every week.
Its just a matter of time before the EGolf Tour becomes the most recognized name in stroke play tournaments as they have continued to operate their events as if there was a full field.
To Join the EGolf Tour or play as a guest for an event, either go online at
www.amateurgolftour.net or contact Wes & Cassie at 865-247-1985.
Go to the website to learn all about the EGolf Tour and discover how many chapters there are across the country. Its an amazing Tour with many large chapters from areas with less local tournaments than are now available in East Tennessee.

Publishers Note:
As the publisher of the Golf News of Tennessee I am very impressed with the persistence of the EGolf Tour to establish itself in an area where there are many more local tournaments available than other areas. I’m looking forward to playing more events this year as time allows.
But really want to impress upon those whom have been considering moving their game to the competitive level. There are enough divisions to insure that all skill levels compete at their own level. If you are still struggling to break 90 or 80, there is a division with players who are struggling to improve just as you are.
I’ve played with several other golf tour organizations and have always found that new players make friends fast and feel at home with those who share the same passion for golf.
The passion for the game is very evident in Wes Cleeney and its contagious. Its an honor to know him and his wife and I believe you will feel the same if you make an attempt to play one of the EGolf Tour events this year.
Thank you for reading the Golf News.
